The Great Gatsby By F. Scott Fitzgerald - 1292 Words
The book The Great Gatsby is often taught in high schools around the world. The book was written over 90 years ago, and despite that the book is still very common in high schools. The book if often used to show the beauty and relevance of the character Gatsby and other symbols within the book. The story of Gatsby is set in New York City and on Long Island, within two locations known as West Egg and East Egg. These areas would be the Great Neck and Port Washington peninsulas on Long Island, in real life. The story is set just after World War 1 and in the middle of prohibition, which is actually a big factor in the story as Gatsby makes his money bootlegging; selling illegal alcohol. The Great Gatsby was published in 1925 and has become one of the biggest pieces of American fiction of its time. The b ook initially was not much of a success but over the years has become a classic piece of American fiction. The book shows how society was during the time in which the book was published. It is because of this the book has become a good way to see how America was back in the 1920s. F. Scott Fitzgerald, the author of The Great Gatsby, is able to preserve how this generationââ¬â¢s political and social ways were during this very historic time period. Politically this time period was a time of growth and prosperity, along with being a time of corruption. World War 1 had ended in 1919, just before the time period that Fitzgeraldââ¬â¢s book is in, and Warren G. Harding took presidency in 1920. One of Hardingââ¬â¢s major goals was to bring the country back to normal; how it was before the war. Hardingââ¬â¢s administration was full of scandals and corruption, and opposition that was fueled by unions and organized crimes. His administration used businesses to rebuild the country, after World War 1. Due to this the administration sided with management in labor disputes over things such as minimum wage, unions, and child labor. Heart-warming story Essay When writing this play, Russell quoted, The story sounds asif it is a Greek myth but there is no existing story, as far as I know, about twins secretly parted who end up killed on the day they learn the truth about themselves. It feels asif it is a story that has always existed and that is what I wanted to create. This generally explains what Russell wanted his audience to understand; in order to do this, he finds various ways to keep them interested yet hanging on and wanting more within the scenes that follow. He puts many comical and loving scenes in Blood Brothers, also scenes, or incidents, of love and misfortune. Throughout the play, the audience is constantly guessing. There are endless clues as to what happens in the following scenes. One of which is, in the scene where the children are playing, Linda is seen covering mickey so he doesnt get upset. If I were to place the characters in specific positions on the stage, Mickey and Linda would be separate, from the gang, and at the front of the stage, whereas the rest of the children would be in a huddle and more towards the middle and the back of the stage. This would illustrate that Mickey and Linda have an obvious connection, which gives us an idea that there is an intimate occurrence between the two of them, later on in life. This scene also shows the characters playing with toy guns. This could be seen as a bit of an insight, of what is going to happen in the future. When the characters are just young children, they have toy guns and are shooting at each other whilst acting out Cowboys and Indians. Again, this part of the play is showing that it is something that is just for fun, showing that there is nothing serious going on. Some people may look at Blood Brothers as a superstitious play, as when the characters grow in age, they become more and more interested in guns. As a result of this, someone is killed. Some believe this is due to children having guns when they are young and continue to use them, as they get older. Others, however, believe it has nothing to do with that, that it is just by chance that a person may happen to like guns when they are older. Also, some believe it is the background from which the person has come from. When referring to the play, we may be persuaded to believe this last point, and the fact that if you come from a working class background, you are more likely to get yourself into trouble. Although, we may be persuaded that if you have a toy gun from a young age, you are moving on to using bigger, better more realistic guns as you become older. Willy Russell quoted,à I am just not convinced that banning toy guns will do anything towards curbing the aggression in childrenà This shows that Russell believes that having a toy gun as a child will not affect our later lives. I think he has portrayed this very well in his play, as he hasnt used what he believes, he has left it open to the audience and has let them think of it what they wish.à When Mickey and Linda go to get Edward from his house, we see class division. I would, again, place Mickey and Linda together, yet centre stage and Edward would be seen through an upstairs window. This portrays the class division and shows us that Edwards status level is a lot higher than Mickey and Lindas. The lighting would be dark and eerie, with one constant spotlight; following the Narrator to show he is important and superior. The backdrop wou ld consist of a bridge and the City of Liverpool, showing the audience exactly where the play is set. My Narrator would be in a shirt and bow tie with a long, black, cloak-like coat, to resemble and evil devil, with jet-black trousers, and smart black shoes. He would look smart and nicely finished. When the atmosphere and dialogue is a lot calmer, the bow tie would hang loose and undone and the jacket would be situated on his arm or flung over his shoulder, to create a fun, more lively feel. He would be stood on certain stage blacks to show his different status levels throughout various scenes in the play. This particular play can be seen and read in many different ways. People may refer it to superstition, luck and misfortune or to the fact that if you have ever done something wrong in your life, you will suffer the consequences. There are so many ways to look at this play, but I see it as a very meaningful, heart-warming story. From the way in which the characters are placed, the class divisions are shown, a love story is seen, violence is portrayed and also how divisions and discrimination can effect our lives. In the process a great number of Palestinians became refugees overnight. Based on these events it is easier to understand what Hamas is fighting for. Before the coming of Israel, Palestine was under Arab rule or Palestinian rule. They did not have to share it with anyone especially a foreigner like the Israelis. In addition thousands of refugees were forced to leave their homeland and it is indeed a violation of human rights. But after this point, Hamas could not provide any more evidence to their claim that the presence of Israel is disrupting Arab unity and undermining their ability to grow as an economic and military power (Hamas, p.101). Instead of providing evidence to support their claim Hamas began to discuss the need to force Israel out of Palestine using military force. Hamas believed that this is the only viable solution to the problem. Hamas also made the claim that their focus is solely on the removal of the Zionist state in Palestine and nothing more. They have no quarrel with other governments but it is implied that this promise only stands if these governments does not show any form of support for the Zionist state. Kleinââ¬â¢s Perspective Morton Klein reacted to the official stance of Hamas that the main reason for their fight against Israel is rooted in economic issues. The author clarified his statement by saying that, ââ¬Å"The historical record clearly demonstrates that Arab extremist ideology, rather than poverty is at the core of Arab-Jewish conflictâ⬠(Klein, p.108). Klein proved his point by pointing out that some of the suicide bombers did not come from poor families. This is a clear demonstration that the goal of the Palestinian militant groups is not just to win against the struggle against human rights violations but something more sinister. Both sources are in agreement that one of the main reasons why Palestinian militant groups are in conflict with Israel is due to nationalistic pride. But Klein and Hamas disagreed on the other root cause of the conflict. Hamas said it is for economic reasons while Klein said that the evidence point to the contrary. The fighters who joined Hamas are well-educated and they have every reason to live and yet they chose to strap bombs to their bodies and shoot their way to death just to kill a few Israelis. It is on the issue of human rights violations as the result of the dislocation of families and the creation of nation of refugees when the nation of Israel was established in Palestine. Even if one brings up the historical fact that Israelis used to live in these lands and therefore has the moral right to share the land with present day occupants it is still a valid issue that the refugees should have been treated more kindly by the governments that instituted the creation of a Zionist state. However, it can be argued that it is not the fault of the Israelis that this has happened. Consider that prior to the creation of Israel, six million Jews were killed in the holocaust not to mention the millions of others who were killed in the thousand year persecution of Jews as they left their homeland and were scattered abroad. In addition, the existence of refugees does not justify t he use of suicide bombers to kill innocent civilians. Politicians may have made a mistake but there is no reason for militant groups to kill women and children using violent tactics that produce the most gruesome results. There is a way to address the refugee issue without killing people. In this regard Hamas has to be challenged concerning their claim that Israel is the cause for Arab disunity. If it is true that Arab nations love each other and that there exists a spirit of brotherhood among the Palestinians then why is that Arab nations, specially the neighbors of Israel cannot provide a program to absorb the refugees. If the refugees were absorbed in the 1950s then the problem of poverty and social inequality in the refugee camps should not have existed. There is more. Hamas cannot prove that the fight against Israel is simply limited to their occupation of a piece of land in Palestine. If this is the case then the violence and military action against Israel should have been con ducted within Palestine and ideally within the region where Israel is currently occupying. However, Palestinian extremist groups brought the fight outside their country and they had no qualms in hurting other people that have nothing to do with the conflict. Consider for instance that in 1968 they hijacked an airline from Rome. Surely not all who were on board are from Israel. How can they explain the fact that Palestinian extremist groups disrupted the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, Germany? There were many non-Israeli nationals who were negatively affected by the action. It is an act of terror and more importantly it was conducted thousands of miles away from Palestine. It seems very clear that Palestinian extremist groups are not just content to force Israel out of Palestine but they also wanted them destroyed once and for all. Conclusion There is something sinister to the desire of Hamas and other Palestinian extremist groups to destroy Israel as a political entity and as a peo ple. It is terrifying to know that professionals and those that belong to the cream of the crop of Palestinian society are willing to die for a cause. It is a deep sense of patriotism and hatred that stems not from the desire for freedom but a terrible hatred for the Jews.
